I promised myself when I became a parent that there were things I would never do, because my parents didn’t do it right. I had so much resentment about them and the last thing on earth is that I would let my children hang out with my dad. And I realized I was making a big mistake, because they say that grandchildren are the parents’ redemption for not killing you when you were a kid. But I think it’s even more than that. When you have a conflicted relationship with your parent and you let your child be with that parent, what you’re really saying is, “I’m giving you another chance. I’m giving you a chance to do it differently.” And when you do that, that’s forgiveness. And then what happens is you may have another chance with that parent with you. We can’t erase or change the way our parents changed us, but we can change the way that we parent them and the kind of parents we envision ourselves becoming.
