We always have this dream of what our life is going to be like when we get to "X." When we get to a certain way, then we will feel a certain way. Especially with our family, when I have the husband, the three children, the white picket fence, the car; I'm going to feel a certain way.
The truth is it doesn't always feel that way. In fact, it can be very disappointing. The child we wanted to go to Harvard, doesn't want to go to college. The child who is an artist, doesn't even want to come home and sit at the dinner table. What I tell people is: First, find truth. Accept what it is that you have in your life because, as the Rabbi says, "In order to be happy, you have to be happy with your portion."
The second truth is this: No one else is going to change it for you. You want to make your family life different? Start with you. You want dinner every night at 5:00 o'clock with your kids? You sit at that dinner table every night and let them come. Eventually, they will, I promise. They did in my house.
