Females in student and administrative leadership

One of the wonderful things we have in this country is school choice. We have single-gendered schools. We have co-ed schools, boarding schools, day schools. We have all kinds of schools. And when I think about education today, I think about what is an optimum match for a child. There are some girls or boys that need single-gendered schools. It's where they're going to flower and come into their own, because they have opportunities that they may not have in a co-ed school. For other children, they need co-ed schools. And still there's that third group of children who could thrive anywhere. But I think it's very important that schools encourage across gender lines all kinds of children to be leaders and give them opportunities to showcase their talents, whether in a single-gender school or a co-ed school. Both kinds of education benefit different children and benefit the same children in different ways. One of the things I think parents can do especially with our daughters is give them concrete examples and role models that are positive. So often girls, because of the media and because of what they see in advertisements, want to emulate the wrong kinds of qualities, and want to develop those qualities in themselves. One of the things we have to do is expose girls to positive attributes, different body images, different kinds of intellect, different kinds of styles, different kinds of careers, and different kinds of strengths, so that they see the world is wide open for them to make choices. And when they begin to understand that, they make better choices for themselves, and their innate abilities to lead and to thrive in schools begins to change. It can be a real paradigm shift when we give them better examples.
