Many parents have asked me, it is more difficult to raise a resilient child if you are a single parent. One of the reasons they ask is because they are often very busy and things are very hectic and they wish that they had more time to spend with their kids. One of the things I say is this: Being a single parent, while there are certainly more responsibilities and it is more hectic, does not mean that you cannot do certain things that will help your child to be resilient. You can still help your child to be a good problem solver. You can still help your child to see that they can contribute. In fact, I've had single parents that say, "I really need your help." Without putting a burden on their child, what they are saying is, you are a very important member of this household. Setting a special time aside for each child, even if it's just for five or ten minutes, can be very helpful in saying to the child, "I truly love you." While there are extra responsibilities and burdens for a single parent, it doesn't mean you can't raise a resilient child. In some families, two parents are there and they are not doing the things that will help a child to be resilient. But I certainly respect all of the single parents out there, that have very busy schedules, and yet, are raising some of the most resilient children in the world.
