The reason why we see so many digestive problems is that in Chinese medicine, we consider that to be the number one issue in children. You're born and the first thing that comes into your body is really through the gut, whether it's milk and then solids. Throughout one's lifetime you are constantly dealing with food and beverages passing through the digestive tract and absorbs and then the waste products are eliminated from the body. We take it for granted that this works all the time. Some kids are not born with a properly formed digestive tract. Some kids have reflux, vomiting, some kids have intestinal neurological issues. That means that the nerves that lie in the intestinal tract does not work properly, so they don't have the proper peristalsis. They can have constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas. This is all very hard for kids. That's why the first thing you deal with as babies is colic. Colic is because babies are uncomfortable, but they have no way of communicating with you, so they cry. With older kids, they will just tell you, "Mommy, my stomach hurts." There doesn't seem to be a way to deal with it. In Western medicine, it's very hard. If you look at the upper GI, lower GI, colonoscopy, there's nothing wrong, there's nothing we can do. In Chinese medicine, we recognize there is an issue. The first thing we do is use acupuncture to make sure it moves properly. Secondly, we work with nutrition. Third, we make sure there is no inflammation in the gut. This is a very effective way to deal with digestive problems.
