Even though my 3rd Graders are very young, one of the main parts of my teaching involves teaching my kids intrinsic motivation. What I try to do, and I suggest parents do, is emphasize the qualities that bring out the intrinsic motivation that all students possess; helping them find meaning in their work, helping them find purpose in their work, helping in finding the joy in what they are doing, and having them do the best job they can. They are not working for rewards. They are not working to escape punishment. They are doing it for deep, personal, authentic reasons that promote caring about what they are doing. So if kids don't love reading, rather than reward them for doing it or punish them if they don't. Let's appeal to their passions. If they love baseball, let's find a book about baseball, maybe read together with them, so they experience the joy of reading along with something that they love to do. That's a very natural, authentic way to help kids become more motivated.
