Looking back on raising my four kids and what it is that may be contributed to them being happy people and functioning young adults, I think it was the example that my wife and I tried to set early on. Your duties and responsibilities as a parent can be burdensome, but your work as a role model for your child is the most important thing. Teaching them to be compassionate, teaching them to love others, teaching them to respect others is the most important place to start and with that foundation, when they start to absorb that as a young child, you can establish borders and boundaries for them and talk to them about those borders and boundaries and help them to live within them. And more importantly, you try to empower them as young people, then teens and then young adults. And by empowering them, they will be able to stand on their own two feet, advocate for themselves and hopefully follow in the footsteps you and your wife have established for them. That to me is the most important thing – being an effective role model.
