A mom who's struggling with her milk supply and would really like to avoid formula will often ask if it's possible for her to purchase or use donor breast milk and is it a safe practice to do. If you receive human milk from a milk bank it's absolutely safe because this milk is flashed, it's pasteurized. However it's expensive. It can be as much as $3.50 per ounce. So another possibility is to find a mom who has a huge milk supply and would be willing to pump and donate to you. This can be very safe, you can have the donor mom have blood tests to determine that her health is good and that she's not using medications that would be harmful to your baby. And if the two moms have a good relationship and feel safe about this, we do have a number of moms who will donate to one another which is really lovely. There's actually a website called "Milkshare" which is mother to mother, where mothers who have ample milk will post they have milk to donate and mothers who are looking for milk will go online and request it and the mothers can just sort of work it out between them, if this is a good arrangement.
