Alisa Donner: My advice for dads and caregivers are you are a part of the family. Your opinion is important so be a part of the family. And communicate, talk, get to know what the values are. If you’re a caregiver, what are the values of the family that you are taking care of that baby for or that child. And model that. Be an extension of that for that family. Also for dad, is to be there as much as possible. Your role in the beginning dad, or significant other, is that mom needs your support. Mom needs someone to hold her back up. So that’s your role in the beginning. Maybe you want to have a more active role than that. That’s plenty of hard work to do. So allow yourself to feel comfortable in that role of being the support, of being the one who listens, of being the one that holds, puts their arm around, consoles, encourages. The father and the significant other of that mom, that’s a great and important role to have. Mom needs it. She’s going to be tired sometimes, she’s going to be exasperated, she’s going to be overwhelmed, and sometimes she’s going to be really strong and she’s going to push back. But be there, be there for her and the baby. Pitch in.
