How to Choose a Family Counseling Niche

Family Counseling Niche

If you are interested in becoming a family counselor, it is important to figure out which niche you should pursue. A niche is a specialty that tells the world more about your specific skill set. Consider asking yourself the following questions as you figure out your niche.

Where are your passions?

The first step to figuring out your niche is determining your passions. For example, if you grew up in a broken or dysfunctional family, you may be driven to help other families in similar situations, and it may even influence the niche you choose. If you had an alcoholic parent, you may focus on addiction therapy. Pursuing your passions will make the career feel more rewarding and help you love the job.

To learn more about yourself, you may want to take a personality test. It will give you insight and help point you in the right direction. A personality test can provide a deeper understanding of your personality, so it is easier to make a decision.

Another option is to take a passion assessment. The test can help you determine if you are living your passions and purpose. You want to align your life with your inner sense of purpose, so you will feel fulfilled.

What skills do you have that will translate to counseling?

When you are thinking about your skills, think about the following questions: Are you a good listener? Are you patient? Are you insightful? Are you empathetic? Do you have good communication skills? Which branch of counseling do your skills fit best?

Consider looking at the requirements to obtain an online counseling degree, so you can see your skills that already align with the job. Finding out the requirements will also show you any gaps that need to be filled in before you can become a counselor.

What type of counseling are you interested in?

There are many types of counseling, including family structural therapy, marriage and relationship counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, mental health counseling, faith-based counseling and others. Choosing your specialty will help you attract the right set of clients who you can help the most.

You want to keep in mind that specializing and picking a niche will not limit potential clients. Instead, it will encourage more people to seek you out because specialists are viewed better and are in demand. Having a niche also helps you stand out from other counseling practices.

When you select a niche, you will enjoy going to work every day because it will align with your passions. You are less likely to give up or experience burnout if you work in a niche you enjoy. You will also experience a higher degree of job satisfaction.

Which age group would suit you best?

Do you relate better to kids, teens or adults? While family therapists often work with the whole family, they can specialize in working with young children, teens or parents. Some may even specialize further and target eating disorders, self-destructive or rebellious behaviors or kids with educational and learning challenges. You cannot work with everyone, so it is important to figure out who you can serve best.

Each age group has its own challenges and benefits. You will need to understand the unique issues that the age group faces at that stage of life. You must also find a way to relate to them.

Where do you want to work?

Understanding the work environment that is best for you is important. You are more productive and happy when you are in the right work environment. Do you wish to open a private practice, work as a school counselor, social worker for children’s services or for a nonprofit organization?

When you think about the work environment, consider if you prefer to be alone or part of a big group. Also, think about the type of business you want to have. Money and awards are important to some, while others prefer to do more charitable work.

Research the market

Find out what the career prospects are in family counseling by doing research. Which counseling areas are most in demand? Which are emerging? As a counselor, you will always be learning something new and expanding your skills, so it is important to understand the market from the start.

Look at the market in the area you plan to work and find out if others offer the same counseling niche. You do not want to be in a saturated market that has no room for growth or new practices.

Choosing a family counseling niche is a step toward making your dreams of becoming a counselor possible. By having a niche, you clearly define what you do best for the world to see. Clients will appreciate knowing what you specialize in and will seek you out.
