How to Keep Your Child Safe During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Child Safety During covid

As parents, our children’s health and safety is our number one priority. Oftentimes, sacrifices need to be made to ensure that our little ones will be able to grow up and lead productive lives. As the threat of coronavirus pandemic brings uncertainties into our lives, protecting our children and keeping them safe is all the more important. How do you ensure that your children remain safe and healthy during this time? Here are some tips to help you:

Teach Them Physical Distancing

As children, it can be second nature to them to mingle with kids their age. When you're out walking with them in the park, it can be hard for them to distance themselves. Since we all have to be careful, you have to teach them early on how to practice social distancing. Whenever someone who is not from your immediate family visits your home, let them know that they should at least maintain a safe distance so that they have a reduced risk of infection. If going out, do not bring them any large indoor areas, such as malls, as a precautionary measure.

Bring Them to Pediatric Check-Ups

Be sure to take your child for regular checkups with their pediatrician. Your child’s doctor can assess if they have any other illnesses that will lower their immune response to fighting bacteria and viruses. Make sure they get their flu shot as well. Studies have shown that children who have updated flu shots have better recovery rates than those who do not. When bringing them out for visits, make sure that they are adequately protected. Have them wear masks and remind them to maintain safe distance and not to touch any surfaces.

If you believe that your child is sick with COVID-19, don’t hesitate to communicate with their pediatrician to let them know of your child’s condition. Don’t think about the stigma of the disease. It is best to think of their health and welfare during this time. According to Tinker Law Firm, your pediatrician should not refuse treating your child. If they can’t carry out their duty, they should refer you to another doctor to best handle your case.

Proper Handwashing

If you haven’t yet, you need to teach your kids about proper hand washing. Remind them that they should at least spend 20 seconds thoroughly washing their hands. It will also help to teach them about the risks of touching the face with unclean hands. When you are out, remind them about the use of hand sanitizers. While they are generally safe for young kids, it must be done with supervision. Young children should not lick their hands while the sanitizer is still wet.

Support Their Emotional Well-Being

Most children will crave going outside. With restrictions in place, it can be hard for them to adjust. They may want to visit the park, go to the toy store, play soccer, run around the park, and just enjoy being kids. When you feel like your children are feeling down, anxious, and bored, you have to be ready to provide emotional support. Talk to them about what they want to do and let them have some fun at home. You can even transform your backyard to their own park or playground so they can still enjoy the outdoors while remaining safe inside your home.

The wrath of the coronavirus pandemic is felt worldwide, and children may find it hard to grasp the whole concept of the pandemic and the new normal. We should exert extra effort to support and protect our kids the best way possible.
