Media is a powerful influence whether it´s TV, web, radio, ads. It tells a child who they are and who they want to be, what is out there for them, what can they take. And the problem with that is that kids can´t tell the difference when it comes to drugs and alcohol in movies, especially they can´t tell the difference between reality and movie props. Parents can play an important role by preempting this. They can start teaching their kids at a very young age about movies and take some of those messages and use them as teachable moments. We can start with three, four and five year olds. When they see images, for example, one of my favorite movies Cruella Devil. When you see Cruella Devil smoking, you have an opportunity right there. That´s a teachable moment. Talk about lungs. Talk about smoking. Talk about how your body works and how important that is. That´s a teachable moments and there are moments like that everywhere. You can always find something to talk to your kids about when it comes to drugs, media and alcohol.
