At the end of your journey in the NICU, whether it's short or long, parents must understand what are the next steps? And one of the very important next steps is going to be the follow up. Who is going to care for your baby? Your neonatologist may or may not have a practice that allows for follow up. If he does he probably will talk to you about seeing your patients very shortly after you are discharged from the NICU. In other case, each institution has their own system where your baby will be followed up. Sometimes the follow up includes the pediatrician, but if your baby has special needs, the care may include a special doctor for his lungs or heart and sometimes a pediatrician that has specialized in the neural developmental progress of babies. So the care may be as simple as pediatric visits immediately after NICU discharge and on a regular basis or fairly comprehensive depending on your baby's need.

Philippe Friedlich, MD, MS Epi, MBA is the Associate Director and Division Chief of the Center for Fetal and Neonatal Medicine at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, as well as the Medical Director of the hospital’s Newborn & Infant Critical Care Unit (NICCU). Dr. Friedlich is a professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
