Parents often ask what is the best place for my baby? If your baby is admitted in a small hospital with a NICU, many parents often ask, should I have my baby transferred to a larger NICU, a NICU with more specialized techniques or therapeutic intervention? My answer to that question is, "It depends." Most NICUs in small hospitals are very capable of handling the common problem that your baby may face. On the other hand, there are times where babies require a higher level of care, meaning they may need to be transferred to a regional center that has more advanced therapeutic intervention to offer to your baby. Talk to your doctor. If you have questions about the safety or whether your baby should require a higher level of care, the best thing to do is to talk to your doctor. There are times where your baby is actually better off in a smaller NICU than a larger NICU. Larger NICUs are often very busy places, with a lot of very sick children, with nurses that have less time to deal with the recovery of the baby. So, if your baby is in a small NICU, it may be just the best place for your baby to be. If you have questions, just talk to your doctor. He probably will be able to explain the difference and the needs that your baby requires at the time.
