Preterm labor and preterm delivery is when you have labor and contractions prior to term, which is typically 37 weeks or beyond. At 36 weeks, if you start to have contractions most doctors won't make a valiant effort to stop that. If you deliver a baby prior to 37 weeks, that's preterm delivery. We can't always anticipate what will happen if a baby is born early. 36 week babies sometimes do fine and go home with you the next day. Some preterm babies don't do as well, and will have to be monitored for longer. It really depends on the baby. There are not many studies that can be done on a woman who is in preterm labor to determine how a baby is going to do.

Dr. Jay Goldberg is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Goldberg earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1996 after completing his undergraduate education at the University of California-San Diego. His internship and residency training took place at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles.
