The process for collecting cord blood and tissue is a simple process that happens immediately after birth. After the baby is born, the umbilical cord that would normally be discarded is taken by the healthcare professional and they extract the cord blood, and if they’re saving cord tissue, they will also take a six to eight inch piece of the cord tissue and put it in a collection cup. These two items are put in a collection kit and they are sent back to the laboratory for processing of those stem cells and ultimately the cryogenic storage of those umbilical derived stem cells. This process is completely painless. It happens after the birth. It only takes a couple of minutes, so rest assured that it’s an easy process and the healthcare professional does all the work. You can simply sit back and enjoy the time with your new baby.
