I'm sometimes asked that if a family were to collect cord blood or cord tissue, if they be able to utilize those stem cells for some of the other family members. Well, it's a somewhat complex question. In order to utilize stem cells, there needs to be a 4 of 6 HLA type match. This a simple procedure that can be performed by the healthcare provider to ensure that the stem cells that you're looking to use would match the intended recipient. In general, you can be assured that there is a 100% match for the baby. When you begin looking at other family members it's typically around 50% probability that it could match one of the parents or sibling and as you move to grandparents or further away there is lesser probability of match.
