When parents are considering whether or not their child is gifted, I recommend that they look at both typical and atypical signs of giftedness. The more traditional signs of giftedness is more school based and cognitive ability. So we would look at things like, meeting developmental milestones ahead of schedule or excelling in academic areas. I think the other areas that parents may consider is those that are not school based. The ones that create creativity, art, music. Some of the greatest minds that we have in our society are individuals who did not do well -- actually, not even considered to be good students in school. Those include Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Pablo Picasso, and Winston Churchill. For parents, I think it is important to remember to look outside the box.
