Diagnosing and treating visual processing disorder

Visual processing disorders can be discovered in very young children, typically once they have some exposure to visual information that they have to somehow manipulate or talk about. You can start to pay attention to whether or not they’re tracking and focusing on what they’re looking at. Treatment is going to be determined based on your testing. So again, you’re going to test the visual system, the visual processing system, and you’re going to pinpoint exactly where the breakdown is in that visual processing chain of events that occurs in the brain. So if the problem is with visual discrimination, you are going to work on training that child to discriminate between the different things. Or training that adolescent to discriminate between different words, different sounds. If the problem is with tracking, you are going to work on when you’re reading, you need to track, so we’re going to create boundaries and borders, we can block the lower line, the line below the line you’re reading and we can block each margin so that as the child is reading, they know when to stop and they know how far down to go. It keeps them within this frame, which is really what they need when they have a visual processing delay.

She also graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Disorders. Once completing her undergraduate work, Erin went on to obtain her Master of Science degree in Speech Pathology from Fort Hays State University in Kansas.

Erin has had extensive experience working with children of all ages in various medical and clinical settings. This has given her a strong background in all areas of child and adolescent speech and language delays/disorders, including, neurogenic speech and language disorders, oral motor and swallowing disorders, voice disorders and apraxia. Erin also specializes in the treatment of auditory processing disorders and other learning disabilities as they relate to speech and language development. She is a national speaker, author, trainer, and mother. Her years of dedication to the field have helped both children and adults.
