Fixing sensory processing disorders

Language processing disorders, auditory processing disorders and visual processing disorders can all be remediated with the proper kind of therapy. What’s tricky is finding the specialist who can determine what the underlying cause is and then treat it accordingly. We see different kinds of therapies being used to treat these kinds of disorders and they’re not always successful, because the person who may be treating it may not quite understand the neurological implication. You have to remember that all of these perceptual or processing issues that we’re talking about, they’re driven by the brain. You have to understand the brain neurology in order to be able to treat these issues appropriately. Otherwise, the children end up in therapy for years and year with a little bit of gain, but they’re never really getting to the true core of the problem. Does that person have to live with an auditory processing delay? Often, yes. They will have it their entire lives. But what happens is you’re healing the system and if you can’t fully correct it, you’re teaching them what they need to do to be able to be functional with their auditory processing. It also depends on how early you catch these problems. The earlier you catch them, the quicker you move towards early intervention, the better your end result is going to be.
