One of the important factors for a parent and a coach is to raise a self-confident athlete. One of the things I do with all of the kids that I've coached is to instil in them that's it's okay to fail. That the best hitter in the major leagues, fails 7 out of 10 times and they're a 300 hitter. Once you explain these things to children, kids, athletes they realize it's okay to fail. It frees them to go out and do the very best they're capable of doing. At the same time you want to also instil in a gifted athlete, the ability to treat the teammates and others with respect, the same way they would want to be treated. And I think that's a very important point too.
