A lot of parents are afraid when they send their teenage daughter off to Spring break somewhere that they're going to be hooking up all over the place, because the media loves to tell us that hook-ups are everywhere and all these college kids are hooking-up. By the way, hook-up is suppose to mean having a sexual encounter with no emotional connection or even no desire to see the person ever again. In truth, I want you to educate your kid about what's really going on. A full 25% of American college students are virgins. And of that population, they list religion as the third most common reason. Mostly, they're trying to avoid pregnancy or an STD, or they're trying to put their education and career first. Secondly, it's a really small percentage of people who are actually hooking-up. The average college student has about one hook-up once a year, yet 99% of college students thinks that the typical college student has three or four hook-ups a year. In fact, it's a very rare occurrence. New research is showing that college students today are having less sex than they did back in the 1980s. Don't look at me like that. Yes, I went to college in the 1980s. All right. So what you want to do is arm your daughter or your son with the real statistics, so that they won't feel the peer pressure to conform to something that's really a very small part of the population. Secondly, you're going to talk to them about relationship building. If you practice slow love - oh yes, becoming friends first, having an emotional connection first, you actually have a much greater chance of having a boyfriend or a girlfriend down the road. If you have sex within 30 days of meeting somebody, you've got about a 90% chance of being broken up within one year. So arm your student with that knowledge before you head them off to Spring break,
