Well-adjusted kids with good grades that end up dying from alcohol poisoning every year end up dying for a number of reasons. First and foremost, they don’t understand how alcohol ultimately affects their body. What parents need to communicate to their teens is that their body and their stomach is just kind of like an hourglass and as they drink something, it fills a little bit up, but it takes time for that to get through. Ultimately, it takes 20 to 30 minutes at the very least for them to feel the full effects of that alcohol. What happens though is in social kind of binge drinking situations, kids will take a shot, they’ll feel something within minutes, but what happens is there’s still more alcohol in there waiting to come down. So they’ll think to themselves, “Oh, I feel okay, I can drink some more, I should take another shot.” And then what happens is that just loads up more into their stomach, waiting to defuse through. And so over time what happens is when they get to the level of what they feel they’re comfortable at, there’s still so much more alcohol waiting to come through to diffuse through their system that it just knocks them completely out. And what happens is they get sick, they pass out. Typically what happens is the friends think that this girl or this guy is not unconscious, they’re just drunk and need to go to sleep. So they put them to sleep and what happens is sometimes these kids will throw up and they’ll choke and suffocate on their own throw up. But what most often what occurs is they’ve had so much alcohol, maybe and/or combined with other drugs, that it basically suppresses their central nervous system which is responsible for breathing and respiration to the point where they look like they’re breathing and then they stop breathing in the middle of the night. And they wake up in the morning, and the kid’s dead.
