The authoritative parenting style is a method of communication that we can use so that our kids won't do drugs. Authoritative parenting means that parents are having a give-and-take with their children when it comes to communication. It means that they set the rules but it's within the family structure, versus authoritarian parenting, which means that the parent sets the rules; there is absolutely no give-and-take, there's no voice for the kids. The authoritative style of parenting has the lowest drug use. The authoritarian style has one of the highest uses of drugs that we know of. So if you can take authoritative parenting and combine it with proactive, positive communication within your family, you've set up a pattern for your entire life of communication with those kids. With authoritarian style of parenting, what ends up happening often is that the line of communication is shut down between parent and child. Once that line of communication is shut down, then the child feels that they just can't go to the parent anymore. When that comes to important issues like drugs and alcohol, or a party or safety, then the parent is now operating in reactive mode instead of proactive mode. It's too late at that point for prevention.
