So one of the key public policy efforts that Common Sense Media is involved in is around privacy. Privacy is really important in our kids' lives and this is an area where, you know, the laws have just not kept up with the technology, evolution. So, there's been a recent update to COPA, which is the Child Online Protection Act, but it really doesn't go far enough in helping us all think about our privacy and figure out how we talk to our kids about this, because, let's face it, they've grown up in a world in which everything is public. And for them, they don't think about privacy the same way we do, so on a policy level, we're doing a couple of things. On the one hand, we are a ballet puppet in Washington, highlighting issues of privacy, particularly the need for industry to think about how they're using their data, we think that kids who go online, their data shouldn't be there forever, so we talk about an eraser button that should be part of a new privacy policies and we also think that it's really important that in the context of this digital literacy and citizenship that privacy be taught in schools. My daughter, who's 19, you know, it's really interesting, when she was 14, she was willing to share everything under the sun, now that she's 19 and she's in college, she stops and she says "You know, who owns my data? Shouldn't I be able to own my own data? Can I take things down that I've put up?" I mean these are, these are concepts and issues for all of us to consider and Common Sense Media is one of the only nonprofit organizations that's out there speaking on behalf of families.

Linda Burch is a co-founder and the Chief Education and Strategy Officer of Common Sense Media, a not-for-profit dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and the independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology. Linda leads Common Sense Media’s education efforts, new program and strategy development.   She is the architect of Common Sense Media’s K-12 Digital Literacy and Citizenship program that is now being used in over 35,000 schools across the country.  Her current focus is on steering strategic development of Common Sense Media’s new learning ratings initiative and establishing international partnerships to bring Common Sense Media’s digital literacy and citizenship programs to countries around the globe.   

Prior to Common Sense, Linda was Senior Vice President of Business Development and Corporate Planning at SyStemix, a biotechnology company that she helped build and then sold to Novartis. From 1985 to 1990 she was a strategic management consultant at McKinsey & Company in New York, where she served healthcare and consumer-products companies and prior to that she spent five years in investment banking at Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch, where she negotiated joint ventures between U.S. technology companies and the People's Republic of China.  Linda received her MBA from Stanford University and her bachelor's degree from Yale.  She has two kids who love media as much as they love being outside.
