Taking toddlers out in public

Taking a toddler out public can be terrifying for a parent because you don't know what's going to happen and it could be embarrassing. It's important for parents to understand that the world looks vastly different to a child. The world is very exciting. There are lots of things to look at and lots of new things to taste and touch and lick. As a parent, if you are going out, you really need to give them as much explanation ahead of time. You connect dots for them in a way that might seem silly, but is actually really helpful for them. So, "Honey, we are going to go to the store today. When we get there, we are going to see all these different things. There are going to be shelves and boxes and produce. We are going to go for a specific reason. We are going to grab bananas and chocolate bars, only. We are not going to grab anything else, even though we may want to. Then we are going to get back in the car and we are going to drive home." By making those kinds of connections and arming kids with information ahead of time, you really prepare yourself for a much smoother outing.
