Part of your evacuation plan is that "Rule of Two": two meeting places, two evacuation routes, practicing it twice a year. Two meeting places--how does your family know which one to go to? A good thing to do is to choose a place that's close by the home--so your first evacuation point, close to the home--maybe the tree outside, maybe the street corner. Your second evacuation route and meeting place should take you to a place that's outside the community--not too far, but definitely something that you can get to--that everybody knows where it is--a fire station, a library, a post office--something that you know how to get to. When you plan with your family, make sure that you're talking about where you go to and when. For your home meeting place, if you're all together, your very first place that you meet at should be that close-by location. If you're at work, and your kids are at school, maybe that community meeting place is the first place that you go. Determine what the plan is with your family now and make sure that everybody knows, and then practice it the way that you would during an emergency. When we're at home, when we're at work--our plans are different, so make sure you know the route that you would take to get to the safest location as quickly as possible.

Hilary Anderson has been with the American Red Cross for the past three and a half years as a volunteer and staff member in positions with communications, disaster relief, development and volunteer services. As the Preparedness and Resiliency Manager, her primary responsibility is the delivery of educational programming across the Los Angeles region to get individuals, schools, businesses and organizations prepared for a disaster. As a dog owner, she also hopes to get your pets ready too! Hilary has a master’s degree in International Policy Studies with an emphasis in humanitarian assistance as well as a bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Journalism and German. She has worked for non-profits abroad in Israel, Bolivia and Germany focusing on grant writing, youth and education and also feeding and sheltering.
