In case of a hurricane--for one, make sure your car's tank if full of gas in case you have to evacuate. What you want to do with any disaster or emergency warning is follow evacuation orders--so be ready to evacuate. For your home, you want pick up and remove, or bring into your garage or home, items that could fly around, move, or cause potential damage. You want to close your shutters, windows, and doors; board them up if possible--if you don't have those shutters--with plywood and nails if you can. Bring your pets inside the home as well--keep them safe and inside with you. Turn off small appliances. Also, it's a good idea to turn your refrigerator to the coldest setting so that if you happen to lose electricity, you'll have the coldest possible setting to keep the food inside your refrigerator as long as possible. Be ready to follow evacuation orders and make sure you have a hurricane plan in place. Your local community may have something specific--for example, particular evacuation routes that you can follow--find out what that information is now so next time a storm comes, you've got it as part of your plan, too.
