My golden nugget of parenting advice comes from my wife who told me very early on never get into a battle of wills with a 3-year-old. And when I think about that, I think about Princess Bride and the character Vizzini played by Wallace Shawn, who says, never get involved in a land war in Asia. Because you automatically are setting yourself up for peril. You cannot win a battle of wills with a 3-year-old. And unfortunately although she told me this before we had children, I had to find out for myself. That's one nugget. The other nugget I have is parenting is the most difficult, arduous, complicated job that you will ever be called upon to do. And it is impossible to do it well unless you have a sense of humor. So I apply a sense of humor with my children all of the time, so much so that my children have now begun to adopt the same sense of humor with me when I make the very few mistakes that I make as a parent.
