To be a social emotional learner means that you are able to take your full self to school every day and are in an environment where you are given the chance to explore who you are, your relationship to those around you, some of the critical elements of social emotional learning are self-awareness, developing empathy, understanding your place in the world around you.
What we know is that education is a relational business, and that for students to be successful in school, they have to know (a) that there is somebody there to support them, (b) that they are in relationship with others in the classroom, and (c) that they are developing the skills not only for their success but to support other students in the classroom endeavors as well.
So if you are not able to work with another student, if you cannot relate to him or her, if you can't bring your full self to the school every day, it is impossible for you to be a strong learner and to access the strong disciplines that the classroom demands.

Percy Abram is the Head of Gateway School. Gateway School is a Kindergarten – 8th grade independent school in Santa Cruz, CA. Prior to joining Gateway School, Dr. Abram was the Upper Division Director at Brentwood School in Los Angeles. An LA native, Dr. Abram received his B.A. (Economics) and M.A. (Education) degrees from UCLA, and his M.A. (Sociology) and Ph.D. (Education) from Stanford University. Dr. Abram and his wife are the parents of a 10-year old daughter and 7-year old son, and despite running a school and being responsible for 260 students each day, he still finds parenting his most challenging job.
