In the bygone days, the only screen time parents had to compete with for their children’s attention was the television. Today, parents are faced with competing with home video game consoles, smartphones, iPad, iPad Touch, laptops, Facebook, Instagram and the Internet. Most likely, your children know how to use all of these.
For most teenagers in America, turning 18 years old is an exciting time. High school graduation is right around the corner, and the possibilities of college or an exciting career are on the horizon. A sense of independence often fills the young adult with confidence and enthusiasm. To be sure, it is often seen as a rite of passage into adulthood.
When my wife and I first built our home, we built it for a family of 6. Now, as we have had three more children join our family, we were in need of more bedroom space. After all, we can only have so many kids share a bedroom, and as you can imagine, we were a little tight on space. We loved our house, and didn’t want to move, yet we needed extra space. Adding on another bedroom was really outside our budget, and was far too big a project that neither of us wanted to tackle, anyways.

This is not an article in which I comment aggressively on whether or not Thirteen Reasons Why glorifies suicide or mental illness, both of which are opinions that I’ve seen declared loudly on Facebook statuses and re-shared articles. The main character, Hannah Baker, told a story that resonated with me in a way that gave me the strength to write mine down.

Moving is never an easy task for anyone. There are so many things to do and keep track of that there’s no time to really take a break and relax. But however stressful you feel it is for you, it’s a whole different kind of stress for your children. While you might see a move as a necessity and even something to look forward to, your child is worried about leaving behind their home, their school, their friends, and the comfort of familiarity.
Scientific studies prove spending time outdoors is healthy and necessary for both children and their parents. Not only does Vitamin D come from natural sunlight, but it’s also one of the best forms of good health for your kids. The fact that spending time outdoors with the kids distracts them from television and other electronics indoors is an added benefit.
