Most employers who promulgate some type of maternity or pregnancy leave policy are sort of mixing the two concepts together because a woman is presumptively disabled for a period of time post birth. So when you look at employer policies, most of them deal with post birth leave. And they might call it maternity leave. They might call it pregnancy leave. But it really is a period of time during which the woman is presumtively disabled due to having given birth. True pregnancy leave is any type of leave taken at any time related to your pregnancy. And the reality is most employers don´t have a policy that addresses that particular scenario. Usually because pregnancy related leave is based upon some sort of disability, such as a high risk pregnancy where you are unable for some period of time to perform the essential functions of your work, maybe even come to work at all. In those cases, it´s the standard disability policies of your employer and the temporary disability laws of the federal and your local state laws.
