One of the first important things in sibling rivalry is to really understand that it’s very common and very normal. And in fact, this rivalry is actually purposeful. When parents really understand that the sibling relationship is potentially the longest relationship a child might have, they can switch their ideas from always getting along to always working together. Here are some tips: 1. Encourage conversations where people are allowed to express different ideas and have different feelings about things – dinner tables are a great place to do this. 2. Model having a disagreement where there is no anger and name-calling. 3. Point out lots of conflicts in siblings who have issues in TV programs, story books and movies. 4. And last, have a general sense of acceptance of differences of opinion in your home. These things really do help siblings have less rivalry.
