There is a benefit for your child to have an Individualized Education Program. It is a roadmap between you and the school district that's specifically designed to help educate your child based on their unique needs. I know some parents are very concerned about having their child labeled. But parents need to understand that you must address your child's disabilities and make sure that all the assessments are conducted so that they get the necessary help to access the curriculum and therefore receive an appropriate education, because that's what they're entitled to. So the IEP is there to help them, not to hurt them. So you have to look at it in that perspective. It's also a legal document between you and the school district. You begin with assessments so they can see all the areas of strength and weakness. From there, you can develop goals and objectives. At that point, you can then discuss services and placement. So parents always need to remember that needs drive goals and goals drive services in an IEP that will only ultimately benefit your child, not hurt your child.
