How parents can best influence their teens

There‘s a saying that you need to practice what you preach. Another way of saying it – I think this is a great piece of advice – is, “Show. Don’t tell.” If you’re constantly lecturing your children about what they should do, but you’re not behaving in the same way, then you’re not consistently showing what you’re telling. So, for instance, if you want your child to learn how to drive without texting or dialing, you need to put down the phone when you’re behind the wheel. You need to show not tell. If you never want your child to drink and drive, you can’t have a glass of wine at dinner and then grab the keys. The consistency in modeling is so important – your child is going to do what you do more than what you say. And that’s the best piece of advice I can give in terms of helping to shape your tween and teenagers’ behavior.
