Balancing the two most important things I do, being a physician and being a mother, are the hardest things I've ever done, but they're also the most fulfilling. And I feel like I have the best of both worlds. The biggest struggle is that there's just not enough time. Sometimes you feel like you're juggling every ball and every ball is falling. I finally have learned to let go of putting pressure on myself, and just realizing I'll do the best I can and keep going. The most important thing is that my child has a role model, he has a view of women that's positive. The advice I would give to working mothers, whatever they do, is to get help. Having a caretaker who can help you so when you leave your home, you feel safe and you feel that your child is loved is so important. Balancing out your time; gone are the days of idle phone calls with gossiping girlfriends or sitting on Facebook or watching Oprah. You have to maximize every moment that you have. Make the quality of your time count. It's not about how much time you spend with your child, but what you do with that time. Listen to them, talk to them, play with them, and just love them. My son never doubts how much I love him. He loves it when I come home from work and he gets to hear the stories about the baby that peed on me, or the delivery that I did, and he's proud. On career day, he writes down that his goal is to one day become like his mother and work in a hospital and help other patients. That's an affirmation to me that ultimately it's working.
