Bleeding after childbirth

All women bleed after delivery, whether it's a vaginal delivery or a Caesarean section. After the baby is born and the placenta is delivered, the vessels in the uterus that were attached to the placenta need to constrict and the uterus needs to contract to close these vessels. During this time, a patient will experience a large amount of vaginal bleeding which is controlled typically with massage, pitocin, and observation. Following the actual delivery, bleeding can occur for approximately 3 - 6 weeks. The bleeding is initially red in color and a small amount, like maybe a heavy period. But each day your bleeding should get less and less. Eventually it will change to a light pink discharge and may continue and eventually taper off. If you bleed too much, you need to contact your doctor immediately. This can even occur when you go home from the hospital. Bleeding too much is defined as bleeding more than one pad an hour and passing large clots. If you ever feel dizzy, lightheaded, contact your doctor immediately and do not drive to the doctor. Call 911 or have a family member take you to the hospital or the doctor so you can be evaluated immediately.
