Morning sickness in pregnancy is caused by the rapid rise in hormones during the first trimester. Specifically, HCG and estrogen. Patients that are prone to nausea are patients that have a rapid rise in this. Patients, such as those with twins. If you have a sensitivity to birth control pills, or if you have a strong sense of smell that has changed with pregnancy, this could initiate a gag reflex. Also, some theories are that if you are carrying a girl, you can have more morning sickness than if you are carrying a boy. The treatment of morning sickness is fairly straight forward. You want to have small, frequent meals. Never keep your stomach empty. Have saltine crackers at your bedside. Have a bland diet. We call it the BRAT diet; bananas, rice, apple sauce, tea, and toast. Avoid fatty foods and drink lots of fluid, but in small sips. Ginger and ginger capsules are fantastic. Also try natural treatments such as acupuncture or the acupuncture bracelets that are available online. Finally, you may need medication. Vitamin B-6 and Unisom are safe to take while you are pregnant, and discuss the doses with your physician. Sofran or other anti-nausea medications are also available and these are safe to take. It is important that you hydrate yourself, you gain weight, and you get some relief from your symptoms.
