The treatment for preeclampsia is only one thing, and that is delivery of the baby. The timing of the delivery depends on when the person is diagnosed with preeclampsia and how severe the preeclampsia is. You will be admitted to the hospital and blood tests will be ordered to check the severity of the preeclampsia. If the liver and kidney function involvement occur, delivery would be recommended immediately. In addition, the doctor would order an ultrasound to check the growth of the baby. Blood pressure medications are started to lower your blood pressure to a safe level. Because there is a risk of seizures with preeclampsia, magnesium sulphate is also started to prevent seizure. Corticosteriods are used if the fetus is less than 34 weeks to help mature the baby's lungs. Ultimately, delivery occurs. If you are after the age of 37 weeks, the doctor would recommend either a c-section or a vaginal delivery. Before 37 weeks, bed rest could occur, followed by delivery if your symptoms are severe.
