How to stay relevant in the marketplace after motherhood

It's so important for moms to remember that our careers are long, they might span from age 21 to 80, and the kid years are short. So, it's really important for moms to always keep a foot in the workforce, even after they have children because otherwise it's very hard to get back in. So, once you have kids keeping a foot in the workforce, whether it's full-time or part-time, is so important for your financial security, for your future of your family, and also for your personal fulfillment, for really feeling like you're using your mind and your body and your brain throughout the years. If you are going to take time off it's really essential to keep yourself relevant. You can do this by reading everything you can to stay up on your industry, and also staying tech savvy, being involved in social media, and really staying relevant that way. And it's also very important to keep your network warm, and really keep in touch with your old contacts. One of the best things about being a working mom is that you are a role model to your children. I'll never forget the day I was working on logos with a designer and my daughter was kind of overhearing me. I didn't think she absorbed anything about the conversation, and the next day she handed me a piece of paper and it was five logos that she had drawn. And it was that day that I realized she's really proud of my work, and your child is probably going to be very proud of your work, too. It's just very important that they see that you enjoy your work. A lot of working moms, because of guilt, they talk about their jobs and their careers as, "Oh, I'm so sorry, I have to go to work again," whereas it would be way better for your child if you said it with passion. "I get to go work again. I love what I do and I hope that one day you find something that you love as well."
