My kids typically don’t give me a lot of ‘my friends can do it’ – we have that conversation a lot, but I do get a lot of ‘daddy lets me do this’. Ultimately everything comes down to compromise.
My daughter did want to get her ears pierced a lot earlier than I thought was appropriate. We talked about it. A lot of other kids had their kids pierced in first grade. I had to think about it a lot. I really wanted to limit that age, but I have to also realize that a lot of other kids are doing it and when I thought about why I was holding off on doing it, I realized maybe it was something coming from my parents and not my own thinking. So I made a compromise in actually letting her do that earlier than I thought I would.
Other situations – if their dad lets them do it – he has his rules, I have my rules. The rules in my house are very clear and we stick to them, but daddy is their father and he has his own rules and I have to stick by them when the kids are in his custody.
