One of the questions parents often have is: What kind of exercises should my child be doing? And the easy answer is anything that increases and improves their heart rate, gets their heart rate to a challenged level. But you want to add into that coordination challenges at the same time, because that involves turning more of your brain on, engaging more of your brain, to be involved; not just to get your heart rate up but also to learn a skill, to learn a new dance step, to train your attention system. We used to say and still do that something like tae kwon do is a great exercise for kids that are ADD- ADHD-like, or ballet, or any kind of very challenging intellectual function while they're exercising, because you get the benefit of the exercise plus the focus and training for the attention system.

John J Ratey, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Research Synthesizer, Speaker, and Author, as well a Clinical Psychiatrist maintaining a private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
