One of the surprises that came upon me as I was writing this book was how effective exercise was in helping females regulate their hormonal fluctuations. I was amazed. I had known that this was as powerful as it is, that we have studies showing that exercise can help with these hormonal changes, during menstruation periods – especially during pregnancy and especially postpartum. One thing that I tell our audiences is that women get a little more bang for their buck out of the amount of time they put in exercise than men do and this can generate a little competitive stuff going on, and help press the women to get out there, but especially when it comes to postmenopausal women, because one way to prevent the depression and the cognitive decline is to have a steady diet of exercise.

John J Ratey, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Research Synthesizer, Speaker, and Author, as well a Clinical Psychiatrist maintaining a private practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
