One of the fascinating findings that have come up in the past 20 years is a condition called PANDAS; or Pediatric Associated Neurologic Deficiency Associated with Strep. This was something discovered at the National Institute of Health, where they were referred lots of children who had the onset of obsessive compulsive kinds of disorders over night, usually following an ear ache, strep throat, or some other kind of illness; usually strep related. What happen is, the body puts up an antibody response to the strep; which also attacks the heart, as well as the joints, so we know it is rheumatoid heart disease or rheumatoid arthritis. It can react with the brain. You set up an autoimmune response to our brains, and this happens to hit an area that's involved with our brain to switch off the task or the activity that they are engaged in. You see this happen with children, often, after a strep infection.
