An adoption of occurs for one of three reasons. Either the biological parents have died or the biological parents have been unable to care for a child properly or the biological parents have made a decision that they can´t care for a child and find a family to place a child with. With respect to the adopting parents, they decide whether or not they want to take this child into their home and have a lifelong commitment with that child. And when they do agree to an adoption, they become the legal parents of that child and have all full responsibility for that child as if that child were born to them biologically. And they go to court, sign a piece of paper in front of a judge saying that they agree to this and then that adoption is at that point final and the child is theirs forever.

Stephen Ravel attended UC Berkley for his undergraduate degree and Santa Clara Law School for his law degree. Stephen has been an attorney since 1973, and has been involved with adoption law since 1984. He has handled over 1,300 adoptions since the start of his career. Stephen is married and has three children. His oldest child was adopted from Brazil at birth.
