Because I have two young children, I decided to have the prophylactic bilateral mastectomy, the oophorectomy, and the hysterectomy, all in one day--all at one time. I had four surgeons in the room, and it was a long process. The oophorectomy and the hysterectomy were really not very painful, and I was going to be up on my feet fairly quickly. I didn't want to take time to go back to the hospital again for another procedure, and not be able to pick up my children, and not be able to take care of my family. Doing that was a pretty difficult process. There was definitely the pain that was involved. However, it wasn't so horrific that I regret doing it. It was uncomfortable. I lost the use of my arms for about six weeks. Within eight weeks, I was back up and moving around, just as normal. However, the biggest issue that I had in this time is that I felt like I was an observer of my own life because I couldn't take on any of the responsibilities that I had in the past. In the beginning, that was really tough--not to be able to cook for my family, clean my house, or pick up my own children--but once I wrapped my head around the fact that I'd done something that was going to actually protect my family in the long run, I was able to take a look at it from a different perspective and say, "You know what? I get to live my life as an observer, without any of the responsibility, for a short period of time." That really helped me come to terms with what I had done and feel good about the decision that I had made.
