Safety tips for using email

Having an email account is a big responsibility. Your child is probably going to start asking for one, somewhere between 8 and 10 years old. It is okay to give them an email account if it is set up appropriately. You may want to start out with a kid friendly account. This way you, as a parent, can have control over what they say and with whom they talk. As your child gets a little bit older, you want to make sure that email stays open and transparent. They are going to need some help understanding email etiquette. That they know that anything they put online can be forwarded to somebody else and has a life of its own. It never goes away. When they understand those guidelines and those rules, and they understand your expectations; then you can begin to give them a little more freedom. You want to role it out slowly, so that they know how you feel about their online worlds.
