The way I handled my pain and labor, contractions without pain medication is basically by keeping calm and staying relaxed. Actually birth is a very spiritual experience, and I think the process starts long before the period of labor. I think you need to take inventory of concerns, fears about birth so you can prepare ahead of time and envision the birth you want. As a Buddhist, I took time to meditate and chant for the birth that I wanted. At the time of my birth, I was using my Buddhist practice as well as deep breathing. I used my glider a lot as well as I walked. All of those techniques really help you stay relaxed and focused on the experience of birth, being present for the birth and getting the job done.
