A great way to help your kids transition into college life is to start, when they are a Junior in High School, letting them take on responsibilities that might seem easier for you to do. Like, if they need a haircut, let them make the appointment. Let them get themselves to the hair cutting place. If they get a parking ticket, let them go through the process of paying the ticket. Let them start to do the things that adults need to do to operate in the world. When it's time to apply for college, make sure they are a big part of that process. Make sure that they are a part of getting their transcripts, where they need to go, following up, making phone calls. Not just filling out the application, but really get them used to talking with adults about what needs to be done next. By the time they are ready to go to college, they will have the skillset. Of course, you will always be there and available to them, but these are the things that kids don't get about navigating in the world because we've been doing it for them all this time.
