What are the top eight allergens? Well, today the top eight allergens are soy, wheat, egg, cow's milk, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shell fish. But what we're finding is that a growing list of foods are triggering allergic reactions, and increasingly we're seeing corn. Sometimes these allergens are tucked into foods in places we would never expect. For example, you might be at a restaurant getting a side order of black beans, and it's been cooked in soybean oil. Sometimes high-fructose corn syrup can find it's way into bread, and you're not aware if you have a child with a corn allergy. So, that's why it's so incredibly important to read the label. And just as allergens are labeled in our food supply, a growing number of Americans are wanting to join the rest of the world and also have these genetically-engineered ingredients labeled, too.
